The Children of Húrin - J.R.R. Tolkien, J.R.R. Tolkien This book is amazing. I'm a huge Tolkien fan, admittedly, but I don't see why people all say only Tolkien fans should love it. Turin Turambar is one of my favorite characters, Beleg is one of my favorite characters, Hurin is one of my favorite characters...etc. The book's writing is cold, yes, and loveless, yes...but it's a tragedy, of course it was meant to be that way. Turin's life was cursed, for goodness' sake. The atmosphere of the book is handled incredibly well, and the writing itself is beautiful, in a tragic kind of way.

The ending was the only part that threw me. I read the Silmarillion, so I was prepared for it, of course, but...(sigh). And I hate it when such wonderful books come to an end.

It still has five stars, of course, because despite then ending I absolutely love it. In fact, I think I might go read it again...
