"Colorless as August" doesn't even mean anything, because August changes color depending on where you live. For instance, where I live, August is bright and hot and bursting with color - tons of blooming flowers, or if the year dies early I guess the leaves might just be starting to yellow. That's it. Green or yellow and/or full of flowers. Very bright. Not colorless. Why didn't she say "colorless as the desert" or something, since USUALLY (not always) deserts are at least mostly brown or tan or white or sepia.
